A stick electrode is a coated metal rod used in manual arc welding (MMAW or SMAW), also known as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). The core wire serves as both the current conductor and the filler metal, while the outer coating (flux) stabilizes the arc, forms a protective gas shield, and creates slag to protect the weld pool.
There are different types of stick electrodes for specific applications:
- Rutile electrodes – easy handling, smooth weld appearance
- Basic electrodes – high toughness, suitable for critical structural welds
- Cellulose electrodes – ideal for vertical-down welding and pipeline work
Stick electrodes do not require external shielding gas, making them especially suitable for outdoor use, site work, and repair welding. They are widely used in steel construction, maintenance, shipbuilding, and pipeline welding.
