Red brass

Red brass

Red brass is a copper-zinc alloy with a high copper content (typically around 85 %) and, in many cases, a small addition of tin. Its distinctive reddish-golden color sets it apart from yellow brass, which contains more zinc. Red brass combines good mechanical strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and outstanding workability, making it a preferred material in both technical and decorative applications.

Key properties

  • Reddish appearance – Highly valued in design, architecture, and visible components
  • Excellent corrosion resistance – Suitable for drinking water systems and mildly aggressive environments
  • Good mechanical strength – Maintains shape and load-bearing ability even in thin-walled components
  • Excellent soldering and brazing properties – Ideal for piping and joining applications
  • Good machinability – Especially in leaded variants (e.g. CuZn33Pb1Sn)
  • Moderate electrical conductivity – Usable in certain electrical applications

Typical applications

  • Sanitary and plumbing systems – Fittings, valves, and water-carrying components
  • Piping and HVAC systems – Soldered fittings and compression connectors
  • Electrical engineering – Terminals, contact elements
  • Decorative hardware and design – Components with a warm, premium metallic tone
  • Mechanical engineering – Bearings, gears, sealing rings
