Welding wire

Welding wire

Welding wire is a metallic filler material used in arc welding processes. It serves as both the electrical conductor and the filler metal that creates the weld joint. The type and composition of the wire depend on the base material, the welding method, and the application requirements.

Main welding wire types include:

  • Solid wire – homogeneous metal wire (e.g. steel, stainless steel, aluminium), often copper-coated
  • Cored wire – tubular wire filled with flux or alloying powders for higher deposition rates or special properties
  • Rod wire – used manually in TIG (GTAW) welding

Welding wire is commonly used in MIG/MAG, TIG, FCAW, and submerged arc welding. It plays a vital role in industries such as steel construction, automotive, pipeline fabrication, shipbuilding, and industrial maintenance. The right choice of wire strongly influences weld quality, mechanical performance, and process reliability.
