Nickel silver alloys

Nickel silver alloys

Nickel silver, also referred to as a copper-nickel-zinc alloy, is a metallic alloy composed of copper, nickel, and zinc in varying proportions. Despite its name, it contains no actual silver—its silver-like luster is achieved through the presence of nickel.

Key properties

  • Silver-like appearance – Smooth, elegant surface finish with high decorative value
  • Excellent corrosion resistance – Performs well in humid and challenging environments
  • Good mechanical strength – Durable and wear-resistant under mechanical load
  • Formability – Suitable for cold and hot forming processes
  • Polishability – Can be brought to a high gloss for visible or decorative applications

Typical applications

  • Coinage – Ideal for circulation and collector coins due to its durability and appearance
  • Jewelry and watchmaking – Used for cases, clasps, and design components
  • Musical instruments – Employed in keys, mouthpieces, bows, and finger plates (e.g. on woodwind instruments)
  • Cutlery and tableware – For premium forks, knives, spoons, and ornamental items
  • Technical components – Such as springs, housings, and connectors where functionality and aesthetics are required

Advantages in use

  • Design meets performance – Perfect for applications requiring both technical reliability and visual appeal
  • Durable and low-maintenance – Resists tarnishing, corrosion, and mechanical wear
  • Adjustable nickel content – Tailors color tone, hardness, and elasticity to specific requirements
