Hardening

Hardening

Hardening is a process in which a material is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled (e.g., in water or oil) to achieve high hardness. This process is commonly applied to steels to increase strength and wear resistance. The rapid cooling leads to a transformation in the microstructure, which increases the hardness of the material but may decrease its toughness.
